Kindle - you just cannot live without it!
Of course you can - but I just love it. Best thing is to be able to quickly preview books for free based on the Amazon recommendation engine. You can browse a very large collection of books (I am registered on the Amazon.com site for largest Kindle book selection) very quickly from the comfort of your own couch. And you can also email PDF files to the device so you are not just limited to Amazon content (which however is very large I have to say, most titles I am interested are in Amazon and most even in Kindle format). Obviously there are some DRM issues here if you want to upload other ebooks into the Kindle (an area I am going to research later a bit more) but nevertheless I am really enjoying the device. The latest generation screen is brilliant, as it is based on "digital ink" technology, it is very high resolution and it does not flicker at all. Your eyes do not get tired unlike with an iPad for example. I have tried to read an book with an iPad and I just cannot do it. Also Kindle is lightweight and small - very easy to hold in your hand for hours unlike iPad. iPad is great for web browsing but for serious book reading Amazon Kindle is simply the way to go.
Obviously nothing wins the traditional interface of a normal book but the "digital ink" technology is so close to a normal paper as it is a reflective media using pixels. It does not require electricity to maintain the image - it consumes electricity only when you reload the image. So I am ready to switch to eBooks now which I thought I would never do.
Also being able to make notes and highlights on the books and review them later is also extremely useful. And when you travel - being able to carry a large selection of books in your pocket is just amazing.
